Visual thinking is not about drawing beautifully.
It is about thinking clearly.

In adult education, especially with vulnerable learners, abstract soft skills like communication, teamwork, or adaptability can feel difficult to explain. Visual thinking helps make these invisible skills visible.

Here’s how to start.

1️⃣ Start with a Question

Before explaining a concept, ask yourself:

  • What does this idea look like?
  • Can I draw it simply?

Communication might look like a loop.
Problem-solving might look like a pathway.
Conflict might look like a staircase.

Start with structure, then add words.

2️⃣ Turn Words into Images

Soft skills are abstract. To make them concrete, ask:

  • Can I show this with a symbol?
  • Can I map it?
  • Can I break it into steps?

Teamwork can be circles connected by arrows.
Decision-making can be a branching tree.
Emotional reactions can be a simple chain.

Mapping supports understanding and reflection.

3️⃣ Use Simple Structures

Visual thinking does not mean artistic drawing.

Use:

✔ Mind maps
✔ Flowcharts
✔ Arrows
✔ Boxes
✔ Timelines
✔ Simple icons

Clarity matters more than creativity.

4️⃣ Invite Learners to Draw

Do not keep the marker in your own hand.

Let learners:

  1. Map a situation
  2. Draw a reaction pathway
  3. Create a simple diagram

Drawing externalizes thinking and increases participation especially for those less confident in speaking.
