Yet across adult education settings, especially those working with vulnerable learners, educators often face a recurring challenge: how to make abstract competencies such as emotional intelligence, communication, or decision-making concrete, understandable, and applicable.<\/p><p data-start=\"721\" data-end=\"964\">The SkillVista Erasmus+ project approached this challenge through the lens of cognitive science \u2014 specifically, <strong data-start=\"833\" data-end=\"855\">Dual Coding Theory<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"860\" data-end=\"885\">Cognitive Load Theory<\/strong> \u2014 to design visual methodologies that enhance comprehension and participation.<\/p><h2 data-start=\"971\" data-end=\"1023\">Theoretical Foundation: Why Visual + Verbal Works<\/h2><p data-start=\"1025\" data-end=\"1327\">Allan Paivio\u2019s <strong data-start=\"1040\" data-end=\"1062\">Dual Coding Theory<\/strong> (1986) proposes that human cognition processes information through two distinct but interconnected systems: a verbal channel and a visual channel. When both channels are activated simultaneously, information is encoded more robustly and becomes easier to retrieve.<\/p><p data-start=\"1329\" data-end=\"1474\">In practical terms, this means that when a concept is explained verbally and supported visually, learners build two memory traces instead of one.<\/p><p data-start=\"1476\" data-end=\"1609\">In adult soft skills education, this insight is particularly powerful. Many competencies are intangible and relational \u2014 for example:<\/p><ul data-start=\"1611\" data-end=\"1701\"><li data-start=\"1611\" data-end=\"1631\"><p data-start=\"1613\" data-end=\"1631\">\u201cActive listening\u201d<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1632\" data-end=\"1656\"><p data-start=\"1634\" data-end=\"1656\">\u201cEmotional regulation\u201d<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1657\" data-end=\"1673\"><p data-start=\"1659\" data-end=\"1673\">\u201cAdaptability\u201d<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1674\" data-end=\"1701\"><p data-start=\"1676\" data-end=\"1701\">\u201cProfessional boundaries\u201d<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"1703\" data-end=\"1888\">These are difficult to grasp through definitions alone. However, when translated into visual maps, structured diagrams, and symbolic representations, they become tangible and navigable.<\/p><h2 data-start=\"1895\" data-end=\"1951\">Reducing Cognitive Load in Vulnerable Adult Education<\/h2><p data-start=\"1953\" data-end=\"2187\">John Sweller\u2019s <strong data-start=\"1968\" data-end=\"1993\">Cognitive Load Theory<\/strong> complements this perspective.
